He set an IHSA state course record at 13:50.
He went on to run for the University of Illinois where he won many big tem titles.
He won the 1976 NCAA cross country championship.
He was the only American male to win the world cross country championships.
He won the 1980 and 1981 world cross country championship.
He was a 3 time Olympian.
