High School Boys Cross Country Hall of Fame Inductee. Coach John King coached cross country at Mahomet-Seymour for 29 years. He also coached boys track and field during the majority of this time. He also was the junior high cross country coach for some of these years. John began his coaching career using his running knowledge and passion for running to lead Mahomet-Seymour to be the best team in the area for decades. Coach King was the 2nd coach of 4 total head coaches for the history of Mahomet-Seymour cross country. His first year as head coach of the cross country team was the 1972 season. Coach King's final year was the 2000 cross country season. Coach King coached one of the fastest runner in our school's history from 1970-2014 (Mark Johnson 14:41), the highest single A team place at State (4th in 1995 and 4th in 1996), a sectional championship team (1979), and eight regional championship teams (1976, 1978, 1979, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1995, and 1996). Coach King was ahead of his time and had the first female runner on an all boys squad in 1974 (Jenny Johnson) and he created the first girls team in 1981. Coach King can be credited with be the foundation of the Mahomet-Seymour Cross Country program. Coach King was also a strong cross country runner himself. He was a 2 time Vigo County champ, a 2 time Western Indiana Con. champ, and one various other invitational championships. He ran for Indiana State University where he broke the school record 3 times. |
